Volumetric Analysis from Drone-acquired Photogrammetry Data

Updated: Oct 29

Read my post on 10 Commercial Applications of Drones here.

Aerial Imagery captured by a Drone / Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) can be processed to assist in multiple workflows. The imagery is embedded with positional information where each pixel is linked to a coordinate - which is how one can plot this dataset on a Mapping platform / GIS.

Survey Drones use a specialized 'Photogrammetry' payload to capture data across three dimensions i.e. in 3D - X (length), Y (width) and Z (height). As you can imagine, this makes every pixel in the imagery informationally richer.

In the case video below, I will process an Imagery dataset captured by the Photogrammetry payload of a Drone to estimate the Storage capacity of a Stormwater Retention Basin using a specialized geospatial module developed primarily for Drone Data processing.

This video is best viewed in HD setting on YouTube's either on PC or in Landscape mode on Mobile Phone. You may reduce / increase the play speed as per your viewing preferences

Case Video: Volumetric Analysis of Stormwater Retention Basin

Interesting, isn't it? The concept-at-work is simple, yet, the capacity calculation couldn't have been performed without the availability of the 3D photogrammetry dataset.

Can you think of some other workflows which could benefit from analyzing & interpreting such type of Drone-captured Photogrammetry data? One unique application I could think of is Stockpile Estimation. The methodology is the same as that depicted in the case video above - just that instead of Depth from ground level which was used to ascertain the capacity of the Stormwater Retention basin, one uses Height from ground level to estimate the volume of Stockpile (of material such as Bulk Goods, Raw Material etc.) typically located in open spaces such as in Mines, at Ports or in Warehouses.
