Navigating the Roman Empire with Orbis

I came to know about this wonderful mapping initiative - Orbis: The Stanford Geospatial Network Model of the Roman Empire recently from my Twitter feed.

It is a Geospatial Network Model of the Roman Empire which depicts 600+ historical sites and 1000+ maritime routes spanning across three continents as operational during that time period. A Network Model is a Navigation simulation tool and this one includes several parameters with as granular a detail as wind speed and wave height available to factor into the computation. Through these, one can not only estimate how long would it have taken to travel from Point A to Point B using the modes of travel available at that time (donkey, carriage, ship and eleven other transpiration mediums), but also obtain insights on what would have been the cost of making that journey (based on the currency of the empire - Denarius).

Route Optimization capabilities were also present in this network model-

One can only imagine the effort that would have gone into making this project a reality. The model's Graphical User Interface (GUI) is like a computer game for History aficionados and is user-friendly too. As a Geographic Information System (GIS) enthusiast, Orbis demonstrates beautifully the capabilities of a robust Location analytics and visualization Web Application.

If only the Romans had accessed to Orbis! I'm sure they would have enjoyed exploring the model to determine time-efficient and cost-efficient ways to move their battle units around or to transport food grains across continents!
