Aerial Datasets acquired through Remote Sensing, be it using a Satellite, an Aircraft, or a Drone, can be processed to assist in multiple workflows. Typically, the imagery/videography of the study area comes with positional information attached to it - every pixel is linked to a coordinate on/above the surface of the earth - this is how one can analyze these as Location datasets using GIS software.
Explore my post on 10 Industrial Applications of Drones here.Â
Drones used for Aerial Survey purposes typically use a Photogrammetry payload which captures information across the three dimensions X (length), Y (width) and Z (height) with high precision. This enables one to create a life-like and accurate digital twin of the study area in 3D, which can subsequently be processed further for making measurements and performing quantitative analysis. This is exactly what I shall be demonstrating in this post - Volumetric Analysis on Photogrammetry data acquired using a Drone to determine the storage capacity of a Stormwater retention basin.
I have performed the analysis (Credit: LearnArcGIS) using ArcGIS Drone2Map GIS module.

Interesting, isn't it? The concept-at-work is simple, yet, the capacity computation wouldn't have been possible without the availability of high-quality photogrammetry dataset which the specialized drone-software conveniently processes. While I have demonstrated the quantitative analysis on a hollowed-surface, it can be used for a raised-surface just as well - think of a situation where you wish to estimate the volume occupied by a stockpile of sulphur at a port or of iron-ore at a mine.
Can you think of some other workflows which could benefit from quantitative analysis and measurements from Photogrammetry data? Do share your thoughts.
