Four Mapping Workflows for Business Intelligence - Geospatial Analytics to find Answers from Complex Datasets

Updated: Oct 28

Just as 3D projection technology revolutionized the Movie-watching experience, Geospatial Analytics through modern mapping technology - known as Geographic Information System or GIS in industry parlance - has added a whole new dimension in terms of our capability to extract valuable insights from geodata. Technically speaking, one can now perform 'Spatial, Statistical, Predictive & Link analysis' all on a powerful and dynamic Location Intelligence platform.

In this article, through four unique video-based workflows, you will see how a specialized module of this Mapping platform aids in solving complex problem statements by bringing to the fore superior Location Analytics-based Insights. Once you understand the concept-at-work, you'll be able to think of multiple situations in which one can leverage this Technology.

Listed below are the Section hyperlinks of the workflows covered in this article-

The videos are best viewed on PC or on Landscape mode in Mobile Phone. You can reduce / increase the play speed on YouTube as per your viewing pace

1. Studying Growth Patterns in Real Estate

In this video workflow, you'll see how an Analyst is able to study the existing Real Estate activity within a district as well as understand the historical growth patterns. He will then proceed to determine the root cause behind the Infrastructure boom (using an additional non-geospatial dataset) and make inferences as to which region can anticipate a growth in construction projects in the future.

This workflow is easy to understand and applicable to multiple types of projects and situations

2. Route Analysis to prevent Accidents

In this video workflow, you'll see how a Logistics Analyst attacks the problem of rising accidents involving cyclists in a bustling city by studying the Collision records and observing the patterns involved. Once the Analyst discovers the underlying factors, he is able to give meaningful recommendations to the City Board on ways to reduce the Accident rates.

The hallmark of this case is how the Project owner (the City Board) has an inspiring vision - to have zero fatal accidents - and how it leverages Technology to influence a positive outcome thereby progressing towards fulfilling the vision.

3. Detecting Anomalies from Medical Prescription Records

In this video workflow, an Analyst investigates prescription records to observe whether Doctors are over-prescribing medicinal drugs for malicious purposes (Drug-trafficking).

The beauty about this case is how a complex problem has been broken up into smaller chunks which makes it easier for the Analyst to decode it. The workflow is designed to investigate a subset initially - subsequently the model is replicated to detect anomalies for the other subsets. In this way, the challenge becomes manageable, the analysis becomes comparable, and the insights that are eventually revealed are remarkable.

4. Studying Differences in Mortality Rate based on Ethnicity

In this video workflow, a Healthcare Analyst wants to verify a Newspaper's claim that there there is an inherent bias in the prevailing Healthcare System based on the ethnicity of the patients - that Black women are more susceptible to dying from Breast Cancer than White women. If the claim is found to be true, the Analyst will proceed to identify the Locations where this bias is most worrying - using scientific methodology - so that he/she can recommend the Local Government to take note of it and improve the Healthcare Facilities catering to Black women in those areas.

While this is a case with Social undertones, the broader concept-at-work is that one can use this Technology to study 'Cause & Effect' relationships. One can, for example, use a similar workflow to determine how two kinds of audience react to the same Advertising Campaign.
