Esri - Staying under the Radar

I admire businesses that have endured over a long period of time. Those that have built a legacy based on quality products, timeless values and stable performance.

However, the times have changed, and how! - innovation, growth, fundraising are some of the buzzwords dominating the business sphere now. The rigors of operating a brick-and-mortar business notwithstanding, one has to even deploy Digital Marketing in order to get decent mass visibility (hence this professional blog😊).

I feel that new businesses are appearing on the horizon like firecrackers - spectacular, dazzling and noisy. Most disappear like firecrackers too, unfortunately. Without a trace. The likes of Google, Amazon and Uber are exceptions though - they seem to be like everlasting firecrackers - a utopia of sorts - churning out products and experiences that customers just can't do without, and at lightning speed.

That being said, one often stumbles upon businesses from the bygone era - those that have managed to exist to this day somehow. Some have evolved over time and keep growing at an appreciable pace, while others meander and/or their fate is expected to be sealed.

Esri is one such company and it falls in the former category. What makes its success story all the more alluring is that it is part of the Technology/IT - a sector replete with short life cycles.

"It (Esri) has survived five tectonic shifts in technology" - Forbes.

Having known and experienced what Esri does - it produces the best Geospatial Software in the world (Geographic Information System or GIS as it is technically known) - in my opinion, it is primed to survive a few more tectonic shifts. The organization has managed to work under the radar, quietly prodding away, building solid domain expertise in the location analytics field, and has been solving problems that matter. They have a >40% global market share and a >70% market share in India and its global revenue stands at 1.1 billion USD as of FY 2022-23. Mapping Professionals eagerly await its annual Technology Conferences held at several locations around the world.

More people are noticing the geospatial sector because of another technology giant - Google.

After all, when we think of Mapping, the first thing that comes to mind is Google Maps, isn't it?

Google Maps is just so useful in so many ways. Locating something? Use Google Maps. Got lost and want to get found? Use Google Maps. Plan an itinerary? Use Google Maps. Google Maps' APIs power so many of the web and mobile apps that we use everyday. All in all, we just love the utility that Google provides through its irresistible navigation tool.

Esri, on the other hand, has built its reputation by providing world class, Industrial-grade Mapping technology and solutions - suitable for Corporations, Institutions and Governments. It does so much for Environment Conservation too - the name Esri actually is an acronym for Environmental Systems Research Institute - it was even initially incorporated as so. A powerhouse of Location Analytics, Visualization & Data Management i.e. Geographic Information System or GIS, Esri's emphasis on providing solutions powered by Location Intelligence has led to a recent rebranding exercise - now it is portraying itself as an entity specializing in The Science of Where. I am certain more and more people will begin noticing and admiring this company as the use cases of Mapping are bound to grow.

Amazon, Uber and Zomato may be known as ecommerce, taxi & food delivery companies respectively - but if you were to think of it, all of them are essentially navigation specialists and where there is movement - there is invariably geospatial technology powering it.

I'd prefer Esri remains under the radar. Like the silent guardian.. the watchful protector... Well, in that case, I must stop writing about it, isn't it? 😊

My firm - Mapmyops / Intelloc Mapping Services, Kolkata - is, at this point in time, a tiny speck of nobody. However, I aspire to make it a sustainable and an enduring business just like Esri - which is why I feel honored to partner with them to deploy their GIS platform at organizations and help the latter to reap benefits from powerful Mapping Technology.
