The beauty about Mapping technology is now it can be integrated with advanced Computing technologies in order to develop a clever solution. On some occasions, Mapping technology can play the role of a protagonist, while on others, it can assume a supporting role. More importantly, and what I like about this field is, that the user retains his/her creative independence on how to deploy the Mapping technology towards achieving a specific objective.
The context behind this - a beautiful TED Talk on how to mitigate a disturbing phenomenon - that of human stampedes-
Mapping/GIS technology plays a central role when the objective to be achieved has dominant geospatial undertones - be it Precision Agriculture, Solar Siting, Transportation Network Design or AEC projects. There are numerous other Workflows where GIS forms just a portion of the overall solution package which carries a mix of computing Technologies and/or Hardware.
In the Stampede case above, the Sensor Mat (Hardware) was a critical component of the solution upon which the Mapping/GIS technology was integrated - this helped to process, analyze and visualize the movement data of the worshippers at the Nashik Kumbh Mela. What customers often need to decide is which Technology and/or Hardware should form the foundation upon which other technologies can be integrated. Just like the base upon which a myriad of toppings can be sprinkled to form a delectable pizza.
